From only five cases reported for the month of August, cable theft cases had risen to 13 cases this September, worrying Laoag City Councilor Vicentito M. Lazo as he requested the city Philippine National Police (PNP) to double their efforts in curbing the said crime. According to Lazo, the Sangguniang Panlungsod has approved the budget allocation requests of the PNP and he is now wondering why there is still no positive development on cable theft cases in the city. As a result of this, Lazo has requested the invitation of the city PNP chief of investigation to shed light on the continued theft case of telephone cable wires in the city. The invitation, Lazo said, is for the police to explain why there is no report on the matter even if all these thefts are being reported to them and are reflected on their police blotter. Lazo’s appeal to the police came at the heels of the scheduled big celebration of telecommunications company in November as they would launch the project to modernize communications capability in the city. The said company is said to be spending from P300 to P400 million for the province and the bulk of which would go to Laoag. “But if we cannot resolve these simple cases on theft of telephone cables, I believe that we will be sending the wrong signals and driving away these investors,” Lazo said. As of presstime, Lazo said the total cost of cable wires lost to thieves ranges from P2 to 3 million. Lazo, who chairs the council’s peace and order committee, said the city police should inform the council of the needed actions to be taken to stop the thefts so they could join in the effort.
