MVF caps birthday celebration with gift-giving activity

Needy residents from the different barangays in the city trooped to the Laoag City Amphitheater early September 4 morning to join Mayor Michael V. Fariñas for a gift-giving activity as part of his month-long birthday celebration dubbed as “A Cause for August.”

Aurora Corpuz, city social welfare officer said, some 2,000 indigents benefited from said activity.

“They were given used clothing, rice and grocery items like noodles, sardines, corned beef/meat loaf/sausage, sugar and coffee,” she said.

“It’s not much but we hope it can help them through these hard times,” she said.

Requests for assistive devices like wheelchairs, canes and walkers were also given out to the sick and elderly, Corpuz said.

The City Tourism and Social Concerns Council also reported that 1,322 poor but deserving students were awarded scholarship grants under the Iskolar ni MVF program. The Mayor thru his MVF foundation pays for the miscellaneous and tuition fee of the scholar.

Invited guests during the birthday diner hosted by Fariñas and his family on August 26 were requested to donate to the foundation in lieu of gifts to the celebrant.

For the second year, the city government prepared simple yet meaningful activities to mark the birthday of the Mayor. The various activities intended for the different sectors in the community included: tree planting and free concert for the youth; feeding program and story telling for the schoolchildren; senior citizens day for the elderly; distribution of fertilizers and livelihood projects for farmers; basic customer service skills training to city hall employees, free medical and dental clinic, free film viewing and mass wedding among many others.

Fariñas thanked his constituents for their continued support to him and his administration.

Meanwhile, Chevylle V. Fariñas, wife of the mayor, said, that the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) dismissal of the murder charges filed against his husband in connection with the shooting of former Laoag Vice Mayor Jimmy O. Chua, is the best birthday gift he received.
