Lazo calls for prayer vigil to stop LC killings
With the series of shooting incidents last year that has continued to this year, and which resulted in the deaths of several people, Laoag City Councilor Vicentito M. Lazo has proposed that a prayer vigil be held for the safety of the city and its residents. Lazo said he believes this is one of the best way to restore peace and order in the city, especially since most of the killings had remain unsolved up to this day. Lazo specified the killing of former Laoag City Vice Mayor Jimmy O. Chua, as he said he is not contented with the decision made by the Department of Justice (DOJ) dismissing the murder charges filed against Laoag Mayor Michael V. Fariñas and others. Chua was gunned down on February 2, just hours after the kick-off celebration of the 2005 fiesta. Recently, a Laoag barangay chairman was also gunned down in his residence. This was later followed by a series of shootings around the city. These occurrences, according to Lazo, are all “bad karma” for the city and a prayer vigil is needed to correct this. Reacting to Lazo’s proposal, Mayor Fariñas said he was in favor of it. However, Fariñas said it would still depend on the people’s belief whether there is really a need for a prayer vigil or a solemn individual prayer. Meanwhile, 10 police officers from the Philippine National Police (PNP) Regional Mobile Group (RMG) arrived in Laoag on September 12 to augment the police personnel of the city. Fariñas said the additional police officers were in response to this long request for additional manpower to the PNP regional office. With this development, Fariñas extended his gratitude to the regional police office for the additional manpower as he said that although the police officers will only have a temporary stay in the city, they would still be a great help in maintaining peace and order in Laoag. Earlier, 15 police officers were also sent by the police regional office. Dominic B. dela Cruz
