Prayer rosary held at city council Session Hall
IN A BID to drive away the evil spirits they believe had taken refuge in the Sangguniang Panlungsod office, Ms Gloria F. Peralta, city administrator, spearheaded a prayer rosary at the council’s Session Hall on the afternoon of September 14. According to Peralta, the primary aim of the prayer rosary is to drive away the evil spirits in the said office considering the numerous untoward incidents that had happened to the people who use the office. The series of events seems to have been kicked off by the killing of Laoag Vice Mayor Jimmy O. Chua in 2005. Chua’s murder was soon followed by the deaths of the brother and secretary of Councilor Vicentito M. Lazo, Councilor Constante F. Dancel Jr.’s brother, Councilor Althea Katrina F. Castro’s grandmother, and the recent motorcycle accident involving Councilor Modesto Melvin M. dela Cuesta’s son. Also included in the prayer was the speedy recovery of Councilor Ruben P. Blanco, who is presently hospitalized. “Sapay la kuma ta saan kuma met a dakes no nagpa-lualo tayo ta diuray diay balay ket pinaaramid ko met and since this is a part of our culture no adda mapas-pasamak a kastoy,” Peralta said, adding that an old woman, whom she did not identify, suggested the move. She went on to say that although it was just a suggestion, “Saan ngata met a dakes no aramiden tayo.” Reacting to this, Sangguniang Panlungsod secretary Enrico Aurelio expressed his approval of the prayer rosary although he was unable to attend the said event. Aurelio also asked everybody’s help to say a prayer for all the bad things that are happening around the city. Earlier, Lazo called for a prayer vigil to return peace and normalcy in the city following the series of killings that occurred around the city. According to him, the events unfolded as a sign of “bad karma.” Councilor Yvonne B. Ranada, for her part, however disagreed with Lazo. “What is happening right now does not only apply to the city of Laoag but also [in] other places. All we need is to pray and [to] unite in order to attain peace always,” Ranada said. Dominic B. dela Cruz
