The Ilocos Norte Water District (INWD) has re-launched its Operation: Clean Water program as it pays tribute to Ilocos Norte Governor Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on the occasion of his 49th birthday on September 13, 2006 and as a manifestation of its continuous commitment to the community in extending basic services.
Operation: Clean Water is a community service program extending free water examination to the people of Ilocos Norte. A brainchild of INWD Chairman Emeric S. Asuncion, the project was launched in September 2001 as the water district’s birthday gift to the Ilocos Norte governor, and has since become an annual undertaking every September.
The month-long free service—which has greatly stirred the public’s awareness on the need to have safe sources of drinking water, especially now that some serious ailments are caused by water contamination through groundwater pollution—is on a first-come, first served basis and people availing of the program normally save from P200 to P1,000 water testing fee.
INWD General Manager John M. Teodoro says that many people have already availed of the free service since its inception in 2001, adding that the water district is doing its best to provide adequate, safe and potable water 24 hours a day at the most reasonable cost.
The INWD Water Testing Laboratory is the only one of its kind accredited by the Department of Health in Region I, equipped with high quality laboratory equipment and paraphernalia and manned by trained personnel.
The laboratory accepts water samples from deep and shallow wells, rivers, lakes, developed and undeveloped springs and other waterworks.
The necessity of having water sources tested is of incomparable importance. There are some water sources that may pose health hazards and many people might be unaware of the risks involved that might jeopardize their health.
INWD received a Plaque of Recognition for its Operation: Clean Water program on January 13, 2003 during the 24th PAWD National Convention at the Bacolod Convention Plaza Hotel in Bacolod City.
Senior Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Mariano V. Marcos II, who chairs the provincial board’s committee on environment and natural resources, is the honorary chairman of Operation: Clean Water.
