RE-ELECTED Laoag Mayor Michael V. Fariñas proudly announced that one his pet projects during summer, the Sama-Summer Together program, was a rousing success. Fariñas elucidated his gratitude to all the participants, especially the parents who allowed their children to join the said summer program of the city government, during the program’s culmination program. The said program is a one-month training activity in sports and mental ability, which also includes singing, dancing, painting, public speaking, math tutorial, computer, creative writing, guitar, chess, badminton and basketball. This year’s Sama-Summer Together participants also increased by more than 50 percent compared to last year. The increase in the number of participants, according to Fariñas, means this city government initiative helps the children in developing their respective skills. Fariñas also noted that this program, aside from enhancing sportsmanship and camaraderie among participants, also serves as a foil for children as this affords them of an activity to while away their time during the summer vacation instead of learning other activities, which may be illegal and illicit. This year’s Sama-Summer Together program began on April 11 and ended on May 11. The Ilocos Times also learned that participants were not only limited to Laoag residents but also those who are from out of the city. The summer event participants presented all that they have learned during the culmination program. They were later given plaques of appreciation by the mayor. Fariñas is hopeful that additional activities as well as more participants would again be added next year for a merrier summer vacation not only for the children but also for the officialdom of the city government.
