A new source of water supply in the province
Aussie scientists search for aquifers in Ilocos Norte

At least two scientists from the Australian Center for International Agricultural Research visited the province recently to conduct a research on aquifers.

An aquifer is an underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock, or permeable mixtures of unconsolidated materials.

Based on geological studies, the scientists had theorized that in the entire Asian region, the Philippines, specifically the province of Ilocos Norte has existing aquifers, hence they pursued to conduct a study of the province’s geological formation.

After paying a courtesy call to Ilocos Norte Governor Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., these Austarlian scientists, with the assistance of the Ilocos Norte Department of Agriculture (DA), went on a province-wide tour to look for possible areas where aquifers may be found.

Historical records show that aquifers have existed for thousands of years but it is only recently that men discovered the importance of aquifers as abundant sources of water supply.

In an agricultural province like Ilocos Norte, the discovery of aquifers can be used for irrigation purposes.

Studies revealed that during the wet season, aquifers would absord the rainwater which can be stored until it is to be used during the dry season. This cycle is seen to benefit the farming communities around the province as it would solve the water supply problems, especially when there is a drought.

In view of this, Marcos said the Australians are still collecting sample in Pasuquin and Burgos, Ilocos Norte, both limestone-rich areas, which according to studies are likely indications of aquifer presence.

Marcos also said the scientists came to the province voluntarily and broached the possibility of transferring their aquifer technology if they find viable sites in Ilocos Norte.

Marcos added that he may visit Australia to see for himself their aquifer technology if aquifer formations would be found in the province as he said with this technology, funds for dams, river control and flood control projects would be minimized and could be used for other purposes for the further benefit of Ilocos Norte residents.
