Margarette Yabes, the Laoag City representative, proved she has the beauty and the brains as she was crowned the Perlas ng Silangan 2006 recently. Yabes, fourth runner-up of the 2006 Miss Laoag City Pamulinawen International, was chosen over the other Miss Laoag candidates by Ms Chevylle V. Fariñas, city tourism and social concerns council chair, who said she was confident Yabes will take home the crown. Fariñas added that Yabes was also picked to represent the city in the beauty search to give chance to runner-up winners to join other beauty contests. With the win, Yabes received a round-trip ticket to Macao for two, on top of the P5,000 cash prize. Yabes also took runner-up honors in the Best in Talent and Most Photogenic categories. The Perlas ng Silangan beauty contest is an annual search exclusively for coastal municipalities, including Laoag City, in the province. In 2005, another Laoag City bet, Ms Dalia Said was also crowned Perlas ng Silangan. Said is Miss Laoag City 2005. Dominic B. dela Cruz
