MVF confirms Lopez as new LC PNP chief
After serving as Laoag City police chief in acting capacity, P/Supt. Wilson Lopez’s designation was approved by Laoag City Mayor Michael V. Fariñas.
Fariñas’ approval came after the mayor chose Lopez over four other candidates for the chief of police post recommended by P/Supt. Juan G. Luna, provincial police director.
The mayor stressed that his choosing Lopez was not merely based on the recommendation but also because of the police officer’s credentials and other accomplishments as the chief of police of several La Union towns as well as during his stint at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Regional Office.
According to Fariñas, he remembers that Lopez and he received separate awards at the PNP regional office one time.
With Fariñas’ approval, Lopez will now serve as the new Laoag PNP chief, replacing P/Supt. Reynante Partible.
Another turnover ceremony though is out of the question since Fariñas said a turnover ceremony was already held when Lopez assumed officer-in-charge capacity recently.
As far as Lopez’s current performance, Fariñas gave the new police chief a “good” grade but stressed that the one-week period was not enough to assess his performance, especially since his assumption to the top police post in the city was greeted by a shooting incident that killed one barangay chairman.
Fariñas then instructed Lopez to focus on the campaign against illegal drugs and to solve the various murder cases in the city.
The mayor also tasked Lopez to concentrate on the order and discipline campaign to maintain a peaceful and orderly Laoag.
Meanwhile, Lopez expressed his gratitude to Fariñas for choosing him as the new police chief for Laoag though he is neither from the city nor the province. Lopez is from Pangasinan.
The new police chief also accepted the instructions of Fariñas on the illegal drugs campaign and the resolution of murder cases.
To be more effective, Lopez said he needs the cooperation of the public which can be achieved if they would immediately report illegal activities to the nearest police outpost or the police station.
In a related development, Fariñas debunked rumors that he was behind the relief of Partible as he allegedly requested Camp Crame for the relief as he stressed that he was also surprise by the sudden departure of the former police chief and the speedy turnover to Lopez, who was then on an acting capacity.
