CITY—The city government here is set to prohibit the selling of any food
items sealed and/or packaged with the use of staple wire after an ordinance
the prohibits this was unanimously approved by members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod. Batac
Councilor Bernard Marders, primary sponsor of the
measure, said this ordinance aims to safeguard the health of residents here,
especially with respect to the food they take in. Marders
said they have noticed numerous food items being sold, not only in this city
but also elsewhere in the province, that are being sealed with staple wire,
among which are peanuts, cornick, and dried fish
among others. “Ta amangan la ketdi
nga di mapupuotan diay mang-mangan ket pati gayam diay
staple wire-en ket makan
na payen ket mabalin nga
isu payen ti pakatayan nukwa diay taon
ana ngarud ket barot dayta
(For the person may not be aware of eating even the staple wire and this may
cause his death),” Marders explained. Marders
also discouraged food processors and suppliers from using staple wires to
seal their products, saying they should instead seal them properly as he
added that there may be times when small insects could get in the staple
wired-sealed products since these are not totally closed. “Napinpintas pay ketdin no maikola, maireppet wenno maisinit tapnu mairikep depende no ana iti pagyanan
da nga food item
natal-talged nga awan makan nga
barot wenno insekto a simrek (It would
be better if it would be glued, tied or heat-sealed for these items to be
properly sealed depending on the kind of the food item for it would ensure
that the person buying them would not be able to eat staple wires or that
insect could enter them),” Marders added. Penalties for violating this ordinance are P100, P200 and P300 fines
for the first, second and third offenses, respectively. In view of the passage of this ordinance, Marders
has sought the assistance of the general public and barangay
officials in implementing the measure as he stressed that this would help their
own health concerns in the long run. He also said he welcomes
anyone who would report violation of the ordinance to him personally or at
