Laoag City Mayor Michael V. Fariñas announced that he is giving all delinquent stallholders at the Laoag City Commercial Complex a final chance to settle their monthly obligations or face closure. He also admitted that based from the records of the City Treasury Office, there are stallholders who have not yet paid their rentals as well some who had not renewed their business permits. The Ilocos Times learned that these stallholders cite the high rental rates at the LCCC as the primary reason for their failure to settle their obligations. They also mentioned the presence of vendors outside the LCCC that compete with them. These problems were presented to the Sangguniang Panlungsod for possible amendments on the city’s Market Code. Fariñas instructed city treasurer Elena Asuncion to give these delinquent stallholders a last chance or if they cannot immediately settle their obligation, they should draft a promissory note which would state that they would pay all of their financial obligations to the city government before the end of the year. Fariñas is hopeful that with this solution, the stallholders would be able to settle all their obligations since they are being given a long time frame. Earlier, Fariñas ordered the closure of fruit vendors located at the northern part of the LCCC as they have been occupying space intended for parking. Fariñas discovered this during a surprise visit. He explained that they have had an earlier agreement with regards to the space they should occupy but the vendors did not heed this. After the closure order was handed down, the said vendors immediately complied with the agreement and paid their penalties at the treasury office for their closure order to be lifted. Meanwhile, the mayor also ordered the City Engineering Office to repair the reported ceiling leaks at the market. Reports indicated that the third floor of the LCCC had been flooded during the last typhoon as a result of destroyed gutters. Assistant city engineer Fred Agpaoa immediately said that they are currently preparing the costing of the said damagers as well as the repair of the leaks at the City Hall New Building.
