MEMBERS of the Laoag City Sangguniang Panlungsod unanimously approved on second and final reading a resolution requesting the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) to increase their contribution to the city government. The resolution-request was coursed through Laoag Pagcor manager Ruel Santos. Presently, the city government receives P300,000 monthly from Pagcor. In the said resolution, the councilors are asking for the contribution to be doubled to P600,000. Laoag Councilor Joseph Tamayo, sponsor of the resolution, said the increase will augment funding for the city’s scholarship program, wherein the city government needs to allocate an estimated P1 million for the program to continue in the coming academic semester. Tamayo explained that city scholars at times experience delay in receiving their allowance due to appropriations delay as a result of shortage of funding. Each scholar receives P1,500 allowance form the city government. Should Pagcor accede to the city government’s request, Tamayo said this would be a big help to the city scholars who would be the first to be benefited. Tamayo added that the increase in Pagcor contribution, if realized, would not be concentrated on the city’s scholarship program but also on other projects including sports development and livelihood programs, among others. City officials have said that they would always be available in case Pagcor’s Santos would want to discuss the request with them. The approved resolution has been forwarded to Pagcor-Laoag.
