Prov’l administrator advocates breastfeeding

Provincial Administrator Engr. Gervacio Velasco’s speech during the Provincial Nutrition culminating program emphasized the importance of breastfeeding of mothers to their babies.

Velasco noted that malnourishment starts from the baby because of improper feeding; that instead of breastfeeding mothers choose to bottled-fed their babies. He said that cows milk should only be intended for cattle. And sad to say that 16 out of 100 babies from 4 to 5 months old are breastfeeds, and the consequences are 16 thousand child deaths annually 1.2 illness, P3.5 billion spent for the treatment like asthma, diarrhea, pneumonia and malnutrition. Parents lost billions of wages due to absences attending to their children and he said that these are the worse effect of malnutrition in our country today.

He emphasized that breastfeeding disclose the child immune system and also protects the mothers from hemorrhage, many types of cancers, diabetes and osteoporosis, also heal the mothers the rigors of pregnancy and giving birth.

During his speech he also urged the help of all Municipal Nutrition Action Officers, (MNAOs) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) to give proper information to their barangaymates as well as in the general public the importance of breastfeeding and teach the school children to eat also proper meals and snacks that instead of instant foods like noodles and junk foods, introduced them to eat our native delicacies/products, like tupig, and eat fruits like guavas, by this economically we can also helping our own community.

He also lauded the important role of the MNAOs and BNHs in leading our young men and women in a healthy lifestyle.

This years theme, “Healthy Lifestyle ng Kabataan, Landas sa Kinabukasan” centered to the youth because they are the future of our nations.

During the month long celebration of the Nutrition program, the Provincial Nutrition Council conducted an evaluation of programs and activities implemented by the Municipal Nutrition Action Officers and the Barangay Nutrition Scholars in the 22 towns of the province. During the culminating program the best performing MNAOs and BNS were awarded of cash prizes and certificates of recognition. In the MNAOs category the first prize was awarded to Bacarra- Menchie Tolentino; 2nd prize was Bangui- Elizabeth Saguiguit, 3rd prize was Paoay- Lilibeth Perdido; 4th prize was San Nicolas- Vitricia Madarcos and 5th prize was Currimao – Linda Tagatac. In BNS Category: 1st prize was given to Brgy 12, San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte-Lucia Raguingan; 2nd prize was Sta. Filomena, Bacarra, Ilocos Norte – Mrs. Marciana Ancheta; 3rd prize was Brgy. Abaca, Bangui, Ilocos Norte- Felicidad Acoba and 4th prize was awarded to San Agustin, Paoay – Mrs. Eufemia Adriatico.

The Provincial Nutrition Council the composed of the different government concerned agencies like the Department of Education-DepEd; Dept. of Agrarian Reform-DAR; National food Authority-NFA; Dept. of Trade and Industry-DTI, Technical Education Skills Development Authority-TESDA; Dept. of Labor and Employment-DOLE; Dept, of Environment and Natural Resources-DENR; Provincial Veterinary Office, Provincial Planning and Development Office, Provincial Agriculture Office, Provincial Budget Office, Provincial Social Welfare Office, Provincial Health Office, Mariano Marcos State University and the Philippine Information Agency.
