Currimao, Ilocos Norte—To further boost the local tourism industry in the province, the hotel administrator of Nipa Beach Resort, an international hotel and restaurant offering world class amenities located in this town and catering mostly to Chinese nationals, has urged Ilocano small and medium industries to become more enterprising in their businesses. Guia Valencia, Nipa Beach Resort administrator, said they would be willing to purchase local handicrafts product made by Ilocos residents if only there would be an adequate supply. According to Valencia, most of their souvenir items being sold in the hotel had been sourced from Metro Manila since these products are not available in Ilocos Norte. Though there are a lot of locally made commodities that can be made available as gift and souvenir items for tourists visiting the province, Valencia said these are not easily available and are being produced in small amounts. Among the local products that could be sold to tourists according to Valencia include hand-made bags and seashell products. “It’s high time now for Ilocanos to become more enterprising and use their creativity in designing products exclusively of their own and they don’t need to go abroad to earn for a living. There are a lot of opportunities here and we could generate more jobs if we know how to manage our available resources,” Valencia said. Leilanie G. Adriano
