Local executives back legal process to resolve political conflict

The League of Cities is behind the President in her decision to face an impeachment court instead of yielding to mounting calls for her resignation.

Mayor Michael V. Fariñas who attended the recent meeting of local executives in Manila said that the group is still behind the administration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and will support the legal process for the resolution of the on-going conflict.

“We do not ask the President to resign, it was never brought. In fact we are supporting her. I am consistent with my stand and so is the stand of the League of Cities that we go through the legal process,” he said.

Fariñas dissuaded the public from continuing the practice of taking their grievances to the streets saying, “If we don’t follow the legal process, there will no longer be a rule of law.”

“If this happens, what will stop us to do the same again if there is a new president,” he cautioned.

“Let’s say if Vice President Noli de Castro assumes office and he commits a mistake, then there will be people power again!” Fariñas exclaimed.

“Haan pulos agplastra ti Pilipinas…isu ngarud nga inaramid da dayta Constitution tapno masurot, haan tay pilpilyen nu sinno ti mangsurot dayta (The Philippines will not have peace and order... this is the reason why we have the Constitution, we cannot choose who will follow it or not), the mayor said.

The city executive is hoping that the political problem will finally end for the good of the country especially after the Catholics bishops made their statement yesterday.

“Of course, the opposition claim that the president being there is the cause of the deterioration of the economy, for our part, we believe the opposition is the cause of the economic problem,” he said, noting the conflict between the two camps.

“The bishops called for sobriety and made it clear that they are not asking her to resign but to make the better judgment, “ Farinas said.
