The Provincial Nutrition Council members led by Ilocos Norte Schools Superintendent Araceli C. Pastor convened on June 29 at a restaurant in Laoag City to set plans for the Nutrition Month celebration in July. Participating agencies during the meeting included the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), the Department of Land Reform (DLR), the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO), the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO), the Provincial Health Office, the Provincial Social Welfare Office as well as the different Municipal Nutrition Action Officers. During the said meeting, they selected July 29, 2005 as the launching day and culminating ceremonies for the Nutrition Month celebration at the Provincial Capitol Auditorium. Ilocos Norte Governor Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. had been invited as the guest of honor and speaker during the main celebration. Regional Nutrition Coordinator Gloria Mañez and Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Shirley O. Sin were also invited to the said event. The main celebration will start with a motorcade, with the assembly and ending points at the Provincial Capitol Auditorium, at 9:00 am, and would go around Laoag City’s suburbs. Other highlights of the program also include the awarding of prizes to the winners of the poster- and slogan-making contest, outstanding municipalities and Barangay Nutrition Scholars. Fingerlings and seedlings will also be distributed to different clientele of the participating agencies courtesy of the Provincial Agriculture Office. Medical personnel from the Provincial Health Office and the Department of Education (DepEd) will also be conducting a medical and dental mission on the same day at the same venue. As July rolled in, streamers were displayed at the Provincial Capitol and other participating agencies headlining the theme for this year’s celebration which said, “Batang May Kinabukasan, Sa Wastong Nutrisyon Simulan.” Radio news plugging in Radyo ng Bayan through the PIA’s radio program was also conducted on July 5 with the council members taking centerstage.
