Bantay-Bayan, PNP sponsor symposium

MINDFUL of the ill effects of illegal drugs as well as the alarming increase of criminality, the Bantay-Bayan Foundation, Inc. (Ilocos Norte Chapter), a non-governmental organization in cooperation with the Philippine National Police (PNP) provincial office launched a province-wide symposium on crime prevention and drug addiction awareness.

The goal of the said activity is to deter crimes through vigilance for one’s safety as well as to instill awareness on the worse effects of illegal drugs. The program was held in the different secondary schools and colleges in the province with topics that included classification of drugs, causes and effects of drug addiction and alcohol and tobacco dependence, parental role in crime and drug addiction prevention, and the punishable acts under the Comprehensive Dangerous Drug Act of 2002. The highlight of the event was an open forum where participating students raised their concerns and questions to the speakers. The activity also included the organization and election of officers of the Student Watch (Swatch) aimed in establishing a student group that will serve as a partner in the campaign for a crime- and drug-free campus.

Speakers in the said symposia were Bro. Salvador “Bob” Villarante, Bantay-Bayan Ilocos Norte chairperson, P/Supt. Reynante Partible, P/Insp. Romeo Rumbaua, PO1 Tarcilla Buena Calaycay, PO2 Cristino Agbuggo, and the chiefs of police and public community relations representatives of the different local police stations in the province who provided information on the crime and drug situation of their respective jurisdiction.

Other contributors to the activity were P/Supt. Dominador M. Halog of the public community relations of the Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office (INPPO), PO3 Frelie dela Cruz and the members of the Bantay-Bayan-Ilocos Norte Chapter.
