MVF presents infra project Balikbayan groups also give donations
Laoag City Mayor Michael V. Fariñas took advantage of the opportunity as he presented three major infrastructure projects to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during her visit to the province on February 10. According to mayor, he had a chance to talk with the President twice when they were at the Fort Ilocandia Resort and Casino and when they were en route to the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena for the Miss Laoag City beauty pageant. The projects presented by Fariñas was the irrigation system for various rural barangays in the city where no water reached them, the flood control project along Barangay Talingaan and parts of Barangays La Paz and 25, and the proposed Laoag City Mini Sports Complex in Barangay Gabu. Fariñas is hopeful Mrs. Arroyo would act on the projects right after the May elections. Meanwhile, the different balikbayan groups that attended the 2007 Pamulinawen Festival also tendered their respective donations to the city. The Kalayaan Group of Hawaii, through Mr. Ben Pulido, promised to again give boxes of assorted medicines for the city hospital, while the Fil-American Group of California gave 50 pieces of basketballs. The United Laoagueños of Hawaii, for its part, conducted a supplemental feeding program to undernourished pupils of Suyo Elementary School as they also enrolled 50 indigents to PhilHealth. Relative to this, Fariñas expressed his gratitude to all City Hall officials and employees for participating in the fiesta events and helping in making this year’s celebration a success. During the regular flag raising ceremony on February 19, the mayor announced that the fiesta was not only for himself or his family but more so for the people of Laoag in honor of the city’s patron Saint, William the Hermit. The mayor also lauded the city police for maintaining peace and order during the duration of Mrs. Arroyo’s visit. Dominic B. dela Cruz
