JEANNETE DIALS, a teacher from the Mariano Marcos State University-Laboratory High School (MMSU-LHS) here in Laoag City was named among the top 10 teachers in the country in a search conducted by the Metrobank Foundation.

Dials, who hails from Barangay 42 Apaya, Laoag City, will receive a gold medal, a trophy and a cash prize of P300,000 for being chosen among the top ten Philippine teachers.

In an interview, the MMSU mentor said she is dedicating the award to the people who help her in the said search as she added that she is willing to share for whoever would wish for her services.

Reacting to this, Laoag Mayor Michael V. Fariñas expressed his congratulations to Dials, whom he said, has proven her dedication in the teaching profession.

Fariñas further said that this kind of award should also inspire others to aspire for the same honor.

In a letter of invitation sent to the mayor by the organizers, Metrobank Foundation Pres. Aniceto M. Sobrapeña invited Fariñas to attend the awarding ceremony on September 5 as he also requested—if possible—the conferment of appropriate recognition to Dials such as a Sangguniang Panlungsod resolution and a citation during a flag-raising ceremony.

Other winners in the nationwide search are: for the elementary level, Jesusa Antique of Padre M. Gomez Elementary School in Sta. Cruz, Manila; Lynn Padillo of Naga Central Elementary School in Naga City; Maydelyn R. Antioguia of Pres. Manuel Roxas Memorial School North in Roxas City; and Marie Therese M. Bagas of West City Central School in Cagayan De Oro City.

For the high school level, the awardees are Rowena R. Hibanda of Pedro E. Diaz High School in Muntinlupa City; Ermie Rabara of Midsayap-Dingalen National High School in Cotabato; Dials of MMSU-LHS; and Noemi O. Obcena of Cagayan National High School in Tuguegarao City.

Dr. Irma R. Makalinao of the University of the Philippines-Manila and Dr. Virginia C. Cuevas of the University of the Philippines-Los Baños were also given recognition as awardees for the higher education level.

The Metrobank Foundation outstanding teacher search, now on its 24th year, aims to recognize Filipino educators with their contribution to the teaching profession, personal integrity and character, instructional competence, and professional and community involvement.

The foundation committee first selected 40 nominees for the semifinal round where they underwent a series of interviews to determine who would be top 20 finalists who then faced the final board of judges, co-chaired by Sen. Allan Peter S. Cayetano, by virtue of his being the chairman of the Senate committee on education, and Education Sec. Jesli A. Lapus.

Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will be presenting the gold medallion to the 10 awardees on September 1 at Malacañang.

The formal awarding ceremony is scheduled on September 5, 2008 at the Metrobank Plaza Auditorium, in time for Metrobank’s 46th anniversary celebration.

Earlier, another Laoag native, Maricon Ramirez of the Ilocos Norte National High School was also named among the top ten teachers in the country by the same foundation.
