The Laoag City Treasurer’s Office (CTO) announced that they have started releasing the mid-year bonus for city government employees last week. City treasurer Elena Asuncion said all permanent employees and elected officials are entitled to avail of the said bonus. The mid-year bonus consists of 50 percent of the employee’s salary and another 50 percent of the P5,000 cash gift. Asuncion however clarified that the mid-year bonus would not be compulsory as the employee still has the option to receive the bonus now or get the total amount in full in November. Records show that the a total of P2,656,787.59 from the general fund and P152,900 from the economic fund for an overall total of P2,809,687.50 have been allotted for the mid-year bonus. Reacting to this, personnel division chief Julie Bumanglag also explained that only casual employees who began work in January and still works presently would be entitled to the said bonus. However, she added that other casual employees who are not entitled to the mid-year bonus could still avail of the yearend bonus in November. Meanwhile, Laoag Mayor Michael V. Fariñas said the reason for the every-other-month procedure was to give opportunity to other unemployed individuals in the city, which is one of the primary problems here. Fariñas added that the main reason for unemployment in the city is too much politics. According to the mayor, there are a lot of projects and opportunities for employment but too much politicking has halted these opportunities. Dominic B. dela Cruz
